SUMMER 2002 COURSE NEWS
WELCOME to the Summer, 2002 CIS 41 course.
As you probably know, this course has "concurrent" sections. This means that no matter what days you are assigned to go to Lab, it is expected that ALL students will show up in Lecture Section (Room B-201 in the Business Building) 4 days a week, on Monday through Thursday mornings, until July 26th, with the exception of the July 4th holiday. The Lecture Section meets from 0900 to 1105.
All Lab Sections for this class meet in the GE-118 Lab in the General Education
Building. Everyone who is signed up in Section 101 (Reg. ID #14242) will meet for
Lab on Mondays and Wednesdays only from 1110 to 1220.
On the other hand, everyone who is signed up in Section 102 (Reg. ID
#14243) will meet for Lab on Tuesdays and Thursdays only from 1110 to 1230.
If you want to use a Lab at any time other than your scheduled times, you should use the Open Lab facilities provided for your use. See your Green Sheet for further details.
If you have questions at any time during the course, please let me know via the e-mail address above. Voice mail messages may be left for me at (408) 298-2181 X3978.
As the course progresses, you will find news that may affect YOU on this Website. You should try to access it at least once a day, since it is the only means I have of contacting all students in between class meetings.
Any revisions to the Green Sheet will also be found on this Website. The Green Sheet will be the first link in the "List of Links" section below. Please check the latest revision of the Green Sheet by clicking on that link. You can then make any necessary changes to your own paper copy as necessary.
E-MAIL ACCOUNTS: It will be necessary for you to have the capability of sending e-mail to me and receiving e-mail from me. This will require that each student have a dedicated e-mail account for this class. Instructions for establishing these accounts will be given in Lab on your second Lab day (Wednesday, 6/19 or Thursday, 6/20). Please wait until then to set up your class e-mail account. If you try to set up your account before getting instructions, you will very likely enter information incorrectly, resulting in a delay in being able to use your account for class purposes. Once these accounts have been set up correctly, you may use them from any computer anywhere that has access to the Internet and a Web browser. Even if you already have your own e-mail account (or accounts!), whether on Yahoo or somewhere else, please use only the one you get in this class for communications related to this class.
ENRICHMENT & REINFORCEMENT ACTIVITIES (ERA's):
The Discovering Computers textbook (which, from now on, I'll refer to simply as the
"DC" text) has an enormous number of activities for students to enrich and
reinforce their learning of material found in each chapter. These activities are
mostly found at the end of each chapter, although some are scattered within chapters.
There are so MANY activities, in fact, that if you were to do every one of them, you'd probably be several years older than you are now before you finished them all. Since we only have six weeks for this course, I will give you some guidance as to which activities will be most helpful in achieving the goals of the course.
WEB SUPP (pronounced "Web Soup") ASSIGNMENTS: In the Class News Sections of the Class Website, you will find some "Web Supp Assignments," which will add to your skills. The Midterm and Final Exams will have questions based on these Web Supp Assignments. The Assignments involve going to specific Websites to locate particular information that can be found there. In this way, you will be able to supplement the DC text and, at the same time, get more proficient at using the Web to answer specific questions.
Please note: Bonus Quiz or Exam questions based on Web Supps will depend on the material that is available on the listed URL's and links within an approximately 1-week period after the URL's are posted on this Website. Therefore, it would be best if you visit the URL's early and take good notes on what you find there, since the materials may change or totally disappear after a few days or weeks.
