NEWS FOR WEEK 1 (6/17 to 6/20) - BPO's Available This Week!

UPDATE OF 6/20 AT 03:00 :
a) Please check the update on the School Notes website for information about the status of your Yahoo! e-mail accounts for the 10 Section.
b) Be sure to check the updated Project Procedures page on the Class Website for new information.
c) The BPO that was scheduled for 6/20 will be postponed until Monday, 6/24.

1.   On the Class Website Homepage, you will find a link to some WebSupp assignments that you should do sometime this week.  These will supplement Chapter 1 of the Discovering Computers 2002 textbook.  (In future news, I'll simply call this the DC Text).

2.   Next week you will need to set up your class e-Mail account. Please do NOT try to do this on your own until after you have gotten back the blue sheet that you will fill in during lecture class on Tuesday of this week.  I will check the blue sheet for anything that might cause difficulty in getting your account established and help you to change any problem information on your sheet.  This way, you should not run into any problems on line when you actually set up your account on the computer.

3.  The specific pages assigned in your Windows 98 Lab Manual for this week can be found in your Green Sheet, which is also available on this Website.

4.  If you are interested in ERA's (Enrichment & Reinforcement Activities) found at the end of Chapter 1 of the DC Text, the ones I would suggest as most useful would be:

Page 1.42 - Key Terms:  You should be able to define or explain any of these terms.
Page 1.44 & 1.45 - Checkpoint:  You should be able to answer any of these questions.
Page 1.47 - Web Work:  Try your hand at the Using the Mouse Lab section and Using the Keyboard Lab.

While there are many other activities at the end of Chapter 1, the ones listed above seem to be most helpful in improving grades.  If you have the time and the interest to pursue any of the other activities you find at the end of the chapter, by all means feel free to explore them.  My recommendations are aimed at those people whose time budget is already under some strain.

5.  Be sure to check the version of the Green Sheet that has been posted to the Class Website periodically.  While there are a number of formatting differences, you will find several important differences in content between the on-line version and the paper version you were given in class on 6/17.  You should make any necessary corrections on your paper version.

6.  Be sure to bring your 7 floppy disks and stick-on labels for them when you come to class on Tuesday, 6/18.  It does not matter if the disks are already formatted or not, since we will be formatting them in Lab on Wednesday and Thursday.  Please do not stick the stick-on labels onto your disks or write anything on the labels until you get instructions from me on how to proceed.

7.  BONUS POINT OPPORTUNITIES (BPO'S) AVAILABLE THIS WEEK:   Bonus Quiz 1 will be given in class on Thursday, 6/20.  It will be a short-answer quiz based on lecture  material that has been given through Wednesday, 6/19 and on Web Supp Assignment 1.  You will need to bring 8.5" x 11" paper (smooth-edged, in other words, NOT torn out of a spiral-bound notebook) and a pen.  You will be using the Standard Header as defined for this class.  [The Standard Header consists of three items of information which must all be put on a single line in the upper-right corner of your paper.  The three items are: your last name, followed by your first name, followed by your 4-digit Class Code Number, which will be given to you in class.  It is expected that you will know these details of what the Standard Header is for the remainder of the course without further reminding by me.]

THIS WEEK'S WIT & WISDOM

Quote of the Week:
"We've heard that a million monkeys at a million keyboards could
produce the Complete Works of Shakespeare; now, thanks to the
Internet, we know this is not true."
--Robert Wilensky

Amazing Things the Movies can Teach you About Computers:
You can gain access to any information you want on a military computer!  All you have to do is type, "ACCESS ALL SECRET FILES" on the keyboard of any home computer.

Question to Demonstrate the Logical Nature of the English Language:
If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?

Ponderable:
Why do we say something is "out of whack?"  What IS a whack, anyway?

Interesting New Breeds of Dogs:
Breed a Collie with a Lhasa Apso and get:  a Collapso, a dog that folds up for easy travel.
